The tragic incident where a bus crash kills one and leaves several others injured on a Lagos roadway has drawn widespread attention, as authorities release more details about what led to the early-morning collision on Majidun, inward Ogolonto, along Ikorodu Road. The devastating crash, which occurred on Monday, involved a commercial vehicle transporting passengers to a planned programme in Ogijo before the unexpected mechanical failure that triggered the fatal accident.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the collision happened when a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EPE 494 XM rammed into a stationary tipper truck parked by the roadside. The truck driver had reportedly stopped to purchase diesel when the tragic event unfolded. “ONE CONFIRMED DEAD, SIX OTHERS GRIEVOUSLY INJURED IN A FATAL ROAD CRASH AT MAJIDUN INWARD OGOLONTO, IKORODU ROAD, LAGOS.”
Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, explained in an official statement that the commercial bus suffered a sudden brake malfunction while moving at an unsafe high speed. Because of the extreme speed and mechanical failure, the driver was unable to regain control of the vehicle. This led to the violent impact with the truck, resulting in the deadly situation now referred to by many as the bus crash kills one incident.
Taofiq noted that the force of the collision was intense, instantly claiming the life of a female passenger. Six other passengers, made up of five women and one man, sustained serious injuries described as critical and life-threatening.
Emergency responders acted swiftly, transporting the injured victims to Benic Special Hospital, where they are receiving urgent medical care. Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased woman were taken to the General Hospital, Ikorodu for proper documentation and further procedures.
LASTMA operatives further revealed that the tipper truck driver attempted to flee after realizing the severity of the crash, but officials quickly pursued and apprehended him. The driver of the commercial bus was also arrested at the scene.
Both drivers were handed over to officers at the Ipakodo Police Division, where a full investigation is already underway to establish liability, determine the exact cause of the brake failure, and review all circumstances surrounding the accident. LASTMA emphasized that every detail will be thoroughly examined to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
To restore order and prevent traffic buildup along the busy corridor, LASTMA officers promptly cleared the road. The mangled bus and heavily damaged truck were removed, ensuring that vehicles heading toward Ikorodu Garage could move without obstruction.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy toward the families and individuals affected by the bus crash kills one situation. In his statement, he shared heartfelt condolences with the family of the deceased woman and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those battling injuries in the hospital.
Bakare-Oki reiterated the agency’s commitment to traffic safety and urged commercial drivers to prioritize routine vehicle checks, especially brake and engine assessments, to prevent avoidable disasters on Lagos roads. He stressed that excessive speed, combined with mechanical faults, often leads to catastrophic consequences like the unfortunate crash witnessed in Ikorodu.
He concluded by reassuring Lagos residents that LASTMA will continue to enforce traffic laws strictly and respond promptly to emergencies to protect lives and ensure safer movement across the state.
