There was Jubilation in Kano on Tuesday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf fulfilled a major education promise by officially issuing appointment letters to 400 newly recruited Mathematics teachers. The governor explained that this move is part of a broad plan to fix long-standing learning gaps, strengthen teaching quality, and elevate students’ overall academic performance across the state.

Massive excitement filled the education sector as the governor presented permanent and pensionable appointment letters to the new teachers, marking one of the most significant investments in Mathematics education in Kano’s recent history. According to his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf noted that the recruitment solves the persistent shortage of qualified Mathematics instructors in public secondary schools, a challenge that has hindered students’ performance for years.

According to report made by Sanusi Bature D-Tofa on Facebook, the governor emphasized that Mathematics remains the backbone of science, engineering, technology, and innovation, stressing that Kano must strengthen its foundation in the subject to remain competitive in today’s knowledge-based world. The move, he said, represents a deliberate intervention designed to reshape the academic environment and open new opportunities for young people.

Governor’s Charge to Newly Recruited Teachers

Addressing the newly appointed educators, Governor Yusuf explained that the 400 Mathematics teachers will serve as catalysts for raising school standards and boosting examination success rates. Their work, he added, will also support students who intend to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

He praised the Ministry of Education and the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSSMB) for conducting what he described as a fair and merit-driven screening and selection process. He encouraged the teachers to demonstrate dedication, maintain professionalism, and show a strong sense of responsibility as they embark on their new roles. The governor reiterated that the confidence the state has placed in them must reflect in their service delivery.

This development has further intensified Jubilation in Kano, with many stakeholders applauding the administration’s focus on building a strong and sustainable education system.
