A touching story currently making the rounds online has reminded many people of the long-lasting value of kindness, as a young man shared how a simple act of generosity during his university days came back to bless him years later.
In a heartfelt post, the man narrated his experience while studying at Ekiti State University, where he formed a bond with a struggling hostel mate. According to him, his friend came from a very poor background, and his parents often found it difficult to raise as little as ₦50,000 for school fees. Hunger was a constant reality for the young student, and he frequently depended on others for survival.
Moved by compassion, the narrator made it a habit to support his friend in whatever little way he could. He revealed that whenever the friend knocked on his door, it was usually to ask for garri, a staple food many students rely on in tough times. Anticipating this, he would sometimes leave a bowl of garri at his doorstep for easy access.
Life of Struggles and Shared Survival
Their friendship grew stronger through shared hardship. The man recalled how his friend became so used to drinking garri that it once made him sick. Despite this, he never turned his back on him. From giving him ₦30 for transportation to lectures, to taking him along to his girlfriend’s hostel for meals, he ensured his friend never felt completely alone.
They lived a modest life, often visiting Ado Market to buy affordable clothing and encouraging each other through difficult academic routines. He also played a significant role in his friend’s academic discipline, waking him up for compulsory night classes during the cold nights in Ado-Ekiti.
Perhaps the most remarkable act of kindness came when his friend fell seriously ill. Without hesitation, the man used his own tuition fee to cover medical bills, even going as far as lying to his mother just to secure another payment for school.
Kindness Rewarded Years Later
Years after graduation, life took a different turn. The once-struggling friend is now a successful academic in the United States, serving as a Professor of Physics at Arkansas State University.
On a recent Sunday, he reached out to his old friend, reminiscing about those difficult days and the sacrifices made for him. Overwhelmed with gratitude, he sent ₦500,000 as a gift—just one of many gestures he has extended in recent times.
Reflecting on the experience, the man emphasized the importance of kindness, stating that good deeds never go unrewarded. His story serves as a powerful reminder that no act of generosity is ever wasted.
“Never look down on anyone,” he concluded. “Today’s struggle can become tomorrow’s success story. I think kindness is an investment that never loses value.”
