A disturbing incident has left a young man, identified as Kunle, hospitalized after a business transaction spiraled out of control, highlighting the risks associated with informal financial dealings and lack of accountability among parties involved.
According to a close friend who shared the story, Kunle has been making a living as a middleman, taking on various street-level jobs to survive. Recently, he was approached by a neighbor to assist in processing a payment involving 20,000 Chinese yuan—an amount equivalent to over 4 million naira. Acting in good faith, Kunle facilitated the process as instructed.
After the payment was made, Kunle’s neighbor forwarded him the transaction receipt, which he then sent to an individual referred to as an “Azaman” based in China. However, what seemed like a routine exchange quickly turned problematic. Kunle reportedly waited for several hours before receiving any response from the Azaman.
When a reply finally came, the situation took an unexpected turn. The Azaman claimed that the bank account used for the transaction had been frozen and that the funds were no longer accessible. This explanation raised concerns for Kunle, who questioned how such an issue could occur within a short timeframe, especially since the account details had been provided by the same individual.
Rather than accepting responsibility, the Azaman allegedly shifted the blame onto Kunle, insisting he should have reconfirmed the account details before proceeding. Efforts by Kunle to explain the development to his neighbor were unsuccessful. The neighbor, convinced of foul play, accused Kunle of collaborating with the Azaman to defraud him.
Tensions escalated rapidly. Kunle was reportedly given a 24-hour ultimatum to return the money or face consequences. Believing it was an empty threat, he remained at home the following day—unaware of what was about to happen.
The next morning, his neighbor showed up at his residence. Unknown to Kunle, others were waiting nearby. As soon as he opened the door, he was attacked and his valuables—including his phone, laptop, gaming console, and television—were taken.
Despite sustaining injuries, Kunle managed to make his way to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers tied to unregulated financial transactions and the importance of proper verification, documentation, and conflict resolution channels in business dealings.
