A video currently making the rounds on social media has captured the attention of many Nigerians, showing a pastor delivering a rather unconventional and humorous interpretation of a well-known biblical story involving Elijah and a widow. The sermon, which referenced the account in the Book of 1 Kings 17:8–24, has stirred mixed reactions online, ranging from amusement to criticism.
In the viral clip, the clergyman was seen preaching passionately while adding a comedic twist to the story of Prophet Elijah seeking refuge during a famine. According to the biblical account, Elijah was sent by God to a widow in Zarephath, who provided him with food despite her own scarcity, leading to a miraculous provision that sustained both of them.
However, the pastor’s interpretation took a different turn. In a surprising and awkward remark, he suggested that there may have been more to the relationship between Elijah and the widow than what was recorded in the scriptures. He pointed out that the widow had been without a husband for a long time and implied that Elijah, being a grown man living with her, may have “taken care of himself and the woman at the same time.”
To further illustrate his point, the pastor used a local proverb, saying, “You cannot give fish to a cat,” implying that certain outcomes are inevitable under particular circumstances. This statement drew laughter from some members of the congregation, while others appeared visibly surprised by the direction of the message.
The sermon has since generated widespread reactions online. Many social media users found the pastor’s comments humorous but inappropriate for a church setting, especially given the sensitive nature of biblical teachings. Others defended the cleric, arguing that his message was simply a metaphor meant to provoke deeper thinking or keep the audience engaged.
One user, @FANS_MediaNg, commented that such a sermon should not discourage people from attending church, emphasizing that worship should remain the primary focus. Another, @Slimjeezi, highlighted the importance of personal study and interpretation of the Bible, noting that individuals should not rely solely on a pastor’s explanation. Meanwhile, @OloladeAwotiwon reacted with laughter, quoting the pastor’s remark about “those who have wisdom” understanding what was not written.
The incident has once again sparked conversations about the role of humor in religious teachings and the responsibility of spiritual leaders when interpreting sacred texts. While some appreciate creative preaching styles, others believe that biblical messages should be handled with utmost care and reverence to avoid misinterpretation.
