A deeply unexpected event unfolded in Nonthaburi, close to Bangkok, where a 65-year-old woman who had already been declared dead shocked everyone when she suddenly knocks on coffin moments before being taken for cremation. What began as a solemn funeral arrangement quickly turned into a dramatic twist that left family members, temple staff, and medical workers stunned.
Family Believed She Had Passed
The woman, identified as Chonthirat Sakulkoo, had reportedly battled health problems for two years. Throughout this period, she was primarily cared for by her brother, Mongkol Sakulkoo, who lived with her and monitored her condition daily.
According to Dr. Mongkol, he discovered her unresponsive and believed she had finally succumbed to her long-term illness. Following local traditions, he immediately began processing the required steps for cremation. He recounted his experience, saying, “I’ve cared for my sister for three years. Officials told us she had died. All the documents had been issued, so we placed her in a coffin and brought her to the temple for cremation.”
His belief that she had passed was supported by the presence of issued paperwork, making the family certain that the burial process could proceed.
Hospital Declines Without Doctor’s Confirmation
Before the cremation ceremony, Mongkol transported his sister’s body to Chulalongkorn University Hospital because she had previously expressed a wish to donate her organs. He hoped to honor that wish even in death.
However, the officials at the hospital informed him that they could not accept her remains since no certified doctor had formally declared her dead. In Thailand, a medical death certificate is required before organ donation or cremation can take place.
This refusal caused some confusion for the family, but they continued with their plan and transported the coffin to the crematorium.
Temple Workers Hear a Sudden Knock
According to nbcnews on Tik Tok, the most dramatic moment of the entire ordeal occurred at Wat Rat Prakongtham crematorium. Staff there informed the family that the cremation still could not proceed without an official medical declaration of death.
As this explanation was being given, a shocking sound broke through the tension — Chonthirat suddenly knocks on coffin, startling everyone nearby. Mongkol described how he reacted in disbelief when he heard the noise coming from inside the casket.
He explained, “I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled. I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin. She must have been knocking for quite some time.”
The sight of her moving inside the coffin sent waves of shock through the room, and the family immediately called for emergency help. A woman in
“#Thailand shocked temple staff when she started moving in her coffin after being brought in for cremation.” nbcnews wrote.
Doctors Reveal What Actually Happened
Chonthirat was urgently taken to Bang Yai Hospital, where doctors carried out several tests to determine what had caused her deep unresponsiveness. Medical experts concluded that she had experienced acute hypoglycaemia, a dangerously low blood-sugar level that can cause a person to appear lifeless.
This condition can lead to a temporary coma-like state, which might easily be mistaken for death without proper medical examination.
Thankfully, doctors confirmed that she was responsive after treatment and is now receiving appropriate medical care. Her unbelievable experience — especially the moment she knocks on coffin — has sparked widespread discussion across Thailand.
