A young Nigerian man has sparked widespread reactions online after publicly expressing regret over what he described as a costly housing decision. The man, whose video was shared on X by popular blogger @AsakyGRN, opened up about his current financial struggle as he faces an impending eviction due to unpaid rent.
In the now-viral clip, the visibly worried tenant lamented choosing to rent a two-bedroom apartment instead of opting for a more affordable alternative such as a one-bedroom flat or a self-contained apartment. According to him, his rent has expired, and he has been issued a quit notice, leaving him with less than two weeks to vacate the property.
Speaking candidly in the video, he said:
“I made a terrible mistake and now I’m regretting it. My house rent is due, and I’ve been served a quit notice. When I wanted to rent this apartment, I should have rented a one-bedroom flat or self-contained. I insisted on a two-bedroom apartment, and now I can’t pay ₦1.5 million to renew it.”
His situation has resonated with many Nigerians who are currently grappling with the rising cost of living and increasing housing expenses across major cities. The video quickly drew attention, with social media users flooding the comment section to share their opinions, experiences, and advice.
Some netizens sympathized with the man’s predicament, noting that the harsh economic climate has made it increasingly difficult for individuals to meet financial obligations. Others, however, were more critical, suggesting that his situation was self-inflicted due to poor financial planning and the desire to maintain a certain lifestyle.
One user, @fineboyrealtor0, related closely to the situation, writing:
“Shey me sef no go do video like this guys I can’t afford my rent too ooo mine is just 800k omo this economy dey cripple me… well I’ve saved halfway I just hope I get it sorted before 2 months 😭 man no fit even reason straight again.”
Another commenter, @BrendaEbyslady, took a harsher stance:
“Common N1.5m you no fit pay for rent… who you be wan impress before? Cut your cost according to your size you say no… now that babe go look for next.”
Similarly, @AytechComp33541 pointed out what he described as a common societal issue:
“That’s typical African mentality for you, you live above your income and creating unnecessary economic burdens to yourself in order to impress friends and girls.”
Echoing this sentiment, @ManNelo50 added:
“Packaging will always be more expensive than reality. 1.5M for 2-bedroom while a self-con would have kept him safe. This is why we say: ‘Cut your coat according to your size, not your neighbour’s size.’”
The incident has since sparked a broader conversation about financial discipline, societal pressure, and the importance of living within one’s means. As Nigeria continues to face economic challenges, many are using this story as a cautionary tale on the consequences of prioritizing appearance over sustainability.
