The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has announced a ban on the use of vehicles with tinted glasses, covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citing growing security concerns and the increasing use of such vehicles in criminal activities.
The directive comes amid heightened efforts by security agencies to tackle kidnapping, robbery, and the notorious “one chance” operations that have continued to pose serious threats to residents of Abuja and its surrounding areas. According to the police chief, many criminal elements exploit tinted vehicles and concealed number plates to evade identification while carrying out unlawful acts. Join our WhatsApp channel.
Speaking on the development, the IGP stressed that the decision was necessary to strengthen security measures and make it easier for law enforcement agencies to identify suspicious vehicles operating within the nation’s capital. He warned that anyone found violating the directive would face the full weight of the law.
In his words, he stated:
“The increasing use of vehicles with tinted glasses, concealed or covered number plate, and unregistered vehicles is a commission of crime particularly to notorious one chance operation, robbery, kidnapping and other criminal activities within and around FCT.”
The police boss explained that criminals often rely on heavily tinted vehicles to conceal their identities and activities from security personnel and members of the public. Similarly, covered or altered number plates make it difficult for authorities to trace vehicles involved in criminal operations, thereby encouraging lawlessness. Join our WhatsApp channel.
The police have urged vehicle owners to comply with the new directive and ensure that their vehicles meet legal requirements. Authorities also called on residents to report suspicious vehicles and activities to the nearest security agency.
As the fight against insecurity continues, the latest directive underscores the determination of law enforcement agencies to close loopholes often exploited by criminals and restore confidence among residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
